Charcoal Navy Vol. II is the color at a different moment than Vol. I. Vol. I was the color the warrior wears in the hour before the move — the preparation, the dark that holds the plan. Vol. II is the color at the moment after the decision has been made and the body is already moving: the Charcoal of the ash that is airborne, that has left the ground, that is in motion between where it was and where it is going; the Navy of the water that the warrior is crossing rather than looking at, the ocean as traversed distance rather than contemplated depth. The washed cotton carries both volumes because the washing is what the fabric has already been through, the prior process that produced the current state, the treatment that left the material in the condition it is in when it arrives in the hands of the person wearing it.
