Saint Vanity: the brand name holds the tension without resolving it. Saint is the highest designation available in the moral vocabulary of the religious tradition — the person who has been recognized, after sufficient evidence, as having lived in a way that exceeds the ordinary requirements of the faith, whose suffering and devotion and specific acts of grace have been examined and found to constitute a category above the merely good. Vanity is what Ecclesiastes 1:2 says everything is: vanity of vanities, all is vanity, the sun rises and the sun sets and the wind goes south and turns north and the rivers run into the sea which is never full and there is nothing new under the sun and all of it — all of it — is vanity. Saint Vanity does not resolve this. The saint is real and the vanity is real and the brand wears both names because the person the brand is for knows that you can be the highest thing and the most empty thing and that these are not always different things, that the pursuit of sanctity has its own vanity and the vanity of the world has its own strange holiness, and that the garment that holds both without choosing is the garment that tells the truth about the condition. BHM is Black History Month: February in North America, October in the United Kingdom, the designated period when the institutional record turns its attention to the history it spent the rest of the year ignoring. Global BHM is the correction: not one month, not one country, not the version of black history that fits inside the calendar slot that was allocated for it, but the full and uncontained thing — the history that connects Igboland to the Middle Passage to Harlem to Lagos to London to every city where the descendants of the people who were transported without consent have built something from what they were left with. Ogor is the Igbo word for warrior. Not defender. Not survivor. Warrior: the one who moves toward rather than away, who does not wait for the attack to come to them, who has assessed the situation and determined that the appropriate response is to go. The Girl who carries the name Ogor is the woman who was in the history that Global BHM is naming but was not in the version of that history that got written down — whose specific acts and specific presence and specific form of the warrior were present in every moment that got recorded under the names of the men who were standing near her. The Attack is the posture: not grievance, not defense, not the posture of the person who is waiting to be acknowledged. Attack. The move toward. The assertion that the history belongs to the person who lived it and the garment belongs to the person who wears it and the name Ogor belongs to the girl who earned it in the places the record did not enter. Charcoal Navy is the washed tee that carries all of this because Charcoal Navy is the Atlantic at midnight: not the blue of the daytime ocean that looks like a postcard, the deep color that the Atlantic is when the Middle Passage happened, when the ships were crossing in both directions, when the water held things that the water does not give back. Charcoal is the ash of the fire that survived. Navy is the depth of the water that the history crossed.
