In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber turned it into the longest-running musical in Broadway history — more than thirteen thousand performances, which means that for nearly four decades, every night in New York, people went underground to watch a story about a man who lived underground. The irony was not lost on everyone, but it was lost on most people, which is fine, because the Phantom was always a story for the ones it was not lost on. Erik — the Phantom, the genius, the man beneath the Opera House — did not live underground because he wanted to.
