The original formulation was No Pain No Glory, or No Pain No Gain, depending on which version of the motivational grammar you encountered first. The pain version is about the individual and what the individual is willing to absorb: the premise is that the distance between where you are and where you want to be is measured in pain, and that the person willing to absorb more of it will close more of the distance. This is a true thing. It is also an incomplete thing. HELLSTAR STUDIOS replaces Pain with Guys, and the replacement changes everything. The pain version asks: how much can you endure? The Guys version asks: who is with you? These are different questions. The pain version is a test of personal tolerance. The Guys version is a recognition that the thing you are doing is not only a test of what you can endure but a test of what you have assembled — the people, the relationships, the specific human presences without which the endurance itself does not produce the result it would otherwise produce. In 490 BC, Pheidippides ran from the plain of Marathon to Athens to report the Greek victory over the Persian army. He ran alone. He delivered the message. He died. The history books record the victory and the message. What the history books do not record is whether Pheidippides’ outcome would have been different if he had not run alone — if there had been someone beside him for the kilometers that broke him, if the cost of the report had been distributed across more than one body. We do not know. We know that he ran alone and that the alone part and the dying part arrived together. The modern marathon is 42.195 kilometers. It was set at that distance in the 1908 London Olympics to accommodate the route from Windsor Castle to the Olympic stadium with an additional adjustment so the finish line would be in front of the royal box. The distance is not a natural unit. It is an administrative decision that became a test of human capacity. No one who runs 42.195 kilometers is truly running alone: there are pacers who exist specifically to be beside the runners who need someone beside them; there are aid stations where people stand in the rain to hand cups of water to strangers; there are crowds who show up for people they have never met to tell them they can finish something the crowd does not have to finish. The marathon is the sport that most completely disproves the premise that achievement is individual. HELLSTAR STUDIOS puts this on a Black tee because Black is the color of the distance before the finish line is visible — the kilometers in the middle of the race where the start is too far behind to be a source of momentum and the finish is too far ahead to be a source of certainty, the color of the part of the marathon that breaks the runners who were only running on pain tolerance rather than on the presence of the people beside them.
