Drill music came out of Chicago’s South Side in the early 2010s and it did not ask for permission to exist. It existed. Chief Keef was seventeen and the sound he was making in the basement was the sound that the next decade of popular music would spend most of its time responding to, whether it knew it was responding to Drill specifically or thought it was just responding to something in the air that had changed without anyone announcing the change.
